Welcome to the Renal Cancer Research Fund website. We are a registered charity (no. SC042977) which was set up in 2011 by kidney cancer survivor, Christy Watson and her sister Gemma Swankie.
After Christy’s initial diagnosis the sisters were shocked to discover that the treatment for (non-advanced) kidney cancer is normally sit and wait to see if it comes back. There is no licensed preventative drug. If the cancer does spread in the body there is no cure, there are only drugs that can give you a bit of extra time. The main problem is that renal cancer research gets very little funding, therefore advancement of the treatment is slow. Also, there are often no symptoms or they can be passed off as something else, so early detection is difficult.
Christy and Gemma, felt they had to do something about, not only helping raise finance but also to raise awareness about kidney/renal cancer. And so the Renal Cancer Research Fund evolved.
We are a team of 5 local girls based in Ayrshire who work on a voluntary basis and are passionate about raising funds to invest into renal cancer research projects through various Green Ribbon Events.
If you would like to help us fundraise by hosting your own Green Ribbon Event, please get in touch. Our details can be found on the Contact Us page. To see some of the events lined up for this year please check out our Fundraising page.
